"Good product, handle, not so good" 2009-04-07
By Mjr Damage (Sacramento, Ca)
I've used the product twice, works as advertised. Only problem is I went to use it a third time, the bottom handle crumbled into pieces. Not good. I had a smaller pressure cooker for about 10 years, never had a problem like that. Wish they had invested a bit more in a better quality handle.

"Do not buy this item - inferior product - not safe to use" 2009-03-05
By buyer
I new it was too good to be true. Last summer I purchased the Fagor 12 Piece Pressure Cooker and Canner Set from amazon.com.

It worked great as a canner. I canned string beans from our garden, tomato sauce, and salsa. It was also the largest pot I own and worked well for boiling chicken and turkey carcasses for stock and making tomato sauce and big batches of salsa.

I made a huge tomato sauce in it over the weekend and planned to divide it up into containers to freeze it for later use. DH decided to make a pasta dinner tonight. The pot was in the fridge and as DH was pulling it out one of the handles shattered!

The pot crashed to the floor cracking the opposite handle, bounced up and splashed tomato sauce all through the fridge before settling on its side dumping its contents onto the scatter rug.

What a mess. Thank goodness the sauce was not hot at the time or some serious injury could have happened. And thank goodness the handle didn't shatter when being used as a pressure cooker.

Edited to Add:

Amazon Customer Service response: "Unfortunately, because more than 30 days have passed since you received this item, we can no longer accept a return as we are a retailer and not the manufacturer of this item." Also suggested I contact Fagor.

Fagor's response: "The warranty does not cover the handles, pressure valves or the gaskets. All the above parts can be replaced. See below for ordering instructions..." Yup, they expect me to purchase replacement handles because the original ones didn't last even one year. I might as well throw the whole thing in the trash as I don't trust that replacement handles won't also shatter in the future.

 "BUYER BEWARE of Fagor's Bait-and-Switch Scam" 2008-11-23
By Vickie L. Sichau (Mountain House, CA)
Fagor is obviously doing a huge bait-and-switch scam with this product. It is advertised as Fagor, but when you get the item, you will notice that it is actually "Cook's Essentials" brand. Even if this is Fagor's own product (which some claim it is), it is much cheaper than the actual Fagor Duo Pressure Cooker in that it does not even have quality stainless steel construction interior; rather, it is teflon coated (not recommended for canning, yet it boasts that it is intended for canning). As so many other unsuspecting buyers have reported, once you get this cheap substitute, you are either stuck with it or required to pay the huge ($20 in my case) return shipping to return it. Also, be aware that it is not only Amazon who sells this unit -- it is also sold as Fagor on Heartland America.com website, and they clearly say that they have the right to substitute whenever they want, and we have nothing to say about it. Both Amazon and any other websites who are running this scam should CLEARLY state that the product is a Fagor "Cook's Essentials" product and NOT the Fagor Duo model that received the top marks on Cooks Illustrated website. Buyer Beware!!!!!!!

"Best addition to the kitchen since my wife" 2008-11-03
By Walter J. Eichler (Clintondale, NY)
I have been using this almost every day since I received it. My wife and I have made some great food, enjoyed many leftovers and have begun to lose a little weight.

We have made stews, soups, Coq Au Vin, Citrus Chicken, custard, and bread pudding. Plus a couple of home made shots in the dark and all of them have been delicious, and not a preservative in the lot.

The prep time takes longer than the cooking, so I finally dug out the food processor again, that shortened up the prep time. Now things will flow more quickly.

I bought the dessert setup by Fagor, it works, but not well. The silicone baking dish and cover is so flimsy they do not mate. This was quite a disappointment, but I'll find a better dish for the desserts.

All in all a great purchase so far and I look forward to using it for many years.

"Great for cooking not so good for canning" 2008-10-30
By D. Sharples (Surrey, BC Canada)
Loved the way it cooks but for canning people should be aware. Since this has a low pressure for 8 lb and high for 15 lb everything must be done at 15 lb. Great if you are at very high altitude but if your at low altitude you will be over processing everything you can. For beginner canners please buy a Ball Blue Book of Preserving so you know what to do and what not to do before forging on with canning. The manual and cookbook is lovely but the canning recipes and also the instructions are vage. For one thing you have to vent a canner before canning not like in cooking. No where in the book tells you this so unless this product is different you could end up with safty problems with your canned goods.
