I bought this knife set for my wife, and she loves them. She's very impressed with how sharp they are and how well they cut. And they give a very nice look in the kitchen. Buying them here, I was able to get them for half of what they are sold for in the stores.
"Cheaper version is better" 2010-01-19By

I had the tan block version of these for years. Gave those away at Xmas and picked this one up (at another retailer) while they were on sale. While in the photos the knives looked superior, and I liked the black block, holding the large knives in my hand told a different story. A knife should feel heavy on the back of the hand for balance when cutting. In this set, it felt as if the handles were hollow and all the weight was forward. The tan set I had with the black handles had a superior weight to all of the blades. Further, the knives themselves do not fit as well into their slots as they did with the older set. This was returned. I'm either going back to the tan block or switching up to Henckels. Also note that this block will also show dust and fingerprints easily.
To clarify the sets Kitchenaid sells -
1. Tan block feat. 8 steak knives - moulded plastic on handles in either black or red (highly recommended)
2. Like the above, but with the hollow handles in a tan block, feat 8 knives... black silicone is wrapped around for handles (poor blade weight/feel) - This set not discussed above
3. The new all stainless blades and black block - hollow handles give very odd weightless feel and only gives you 6 steak knives
4. There are other variations of these blades and handle wraps in sort of a fan-like block... in tan... never used personally
Rust -
I will say that I did not own this set long enough to experience rust, but the older block I had did rust. But that was my fault for running them in the dishwasher or leaving them in water here and there. Some mildly abrasive scrubbers took that right off though.

After years of owning rubbish knives, I decided to purchase some good one. I went with kitchen aid as they seem to have a good brand name for quality. I have to say that I'm very happy with my choice. Not only are these knives super sharp but there is a nice different selection of knives for all your cooking needs.
I highly recommend them.
"Not impressed" 2010-01-09By

I've had this knife set just over 2 years now and have to say that I am not impressed. Not only do most of the knives have rust spots on them but the tip of the chef's knife has broken off and one of the steak knives has broken in half!
I will definitely be looking at different brands in the future for a higher quality knife set.
