Educational, everything you need to know. Maybe more. Well written, easy to understand. Great color photos.
If you are interested in this subject. This book is a great educator.
"What a fun book!" 2010-01-17By
Keith W. JonesI purchased this book second-hand at a head shop on a lark. By the time I finished reading it, I was already planning a number of experiments! That was 2 years ago, and I have been an avid mycophile ever since! Reading through the book a couple of times before starting a mushroom experiment may help to clear up any questions you have, but don't expect perfect results without a few failures, first. That's just how it is with ANY mushroom cultivation!

The author of this book really put effort into his studies before writing this little book. Any first time cultivator can get a great amount of knowledge about all the psilocybe mushroom speices. Invaluable to any mycologist. This book also will give the authors knowledge of many other great books in this particular field though you may not need them.
"Good for basic info but found 4 inaccuracies in 5 min." 2009-09-12By

Based on modern understanding of Psilocybin mushroom cultivation, this book is already out of date. This is because the world of mushroom cultivation has taken a great leap forward in the pas 3-4 years (I have been away since 2003, and i already had to relearn much of what i "knew" to be true). Also, It has no information on sclerotia forming species, but as it is a 'mushroom' cultivating book and not a sclerotia cultivating book (they are not technically mushrooms) i guess thats ok. Basically, it's good on the basics of cultivation, most of the info is accurate, and all the techniques will work. but there is so much more out there now. I'll keep it for reference and history, but i have much better methods that are described. Maybe when i have read it i'll scribble some notes and websites in it and sell it a used book store, so others will get the growing bug. If you really wanna learn the new methods, check out RR's dvd called "let's grow mushrooms." But note, I gave it 4 stars for a reason.... it's still good
"Start here if you want to grow *ANY* kind of mushroom." 2009-07-22By

Although the Stamets handbooks are very informative, they're more like reference encyclopedias to me.
If you want to try your hand at growing *ANY KIND* of mushrooms this is the book to start with. I just wanted to culture, innoculate and grow some edible mushrooms, but the stuff I've found on the internet was sketchy at best. Or geared towards hard core magic mushroom enthusiasts.
This book is a great, non-intimidating, basic guide to getting started.
Mushrooms are really mysterious but interesting things to grow. And you don't need crazy sterile culture laminar flow hoods and expensive equipment. The biggest expense is a good solid pressure cooker for sterilizing stuff.
I highly recommend this book, regardless of the kind of mushroom you're seeking to grow.
